The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Ms Nomusa Dube, MPL, in her capacity as the Champion of the Government Flagship Programme in the eThekwini Municipality and His Worship the Mayor of eThekwini, Cllr Obed Mlaba, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the eThekwini HIV/AIDS Council invite members of the media to the World Aids Day Commemoration event which will be held at Amaoti on Wednesday.
Recent reports revealed that eThekwini District is leading with the high rate of HIV and TB infection. Other health and social issues like poverty, unemployment, crime and substance abuse remain a challenge.
The commemoration comes after a series of build up events aiming to create awareness around HIV and AIDS and other methods available to prevent the disease.
Mayor Mlaba said: “World AIDS Day is about raising awareness on issues affecting communities and to remember those who have passed on due to the disease. It’s about ensuring that those who are already infected do not spread the disease and those who are negative remain so.”
This year’s event will also focus on addressing health and social aspects which affect the well being of communities. The MEC and the Mayor will have the opportunity to visit at least four families that are very deprived. Other activities include a prevention walk and a dialogue session, whereby MEC Dube and Mayor Mlaba will be engaging communities to discuss issues affecting them.
